A few years ago ‘kerkheart’ brought out a new range of copper coated horseshoe nails and have been changing the way farriers shoe horses ever since. The antimicrobial qualities of copper have been well documented in recent history and its presence to the hoof care industry has certainly made an impact.
The copper coating on these nails prevents the steel underneath from rusting. Rust traps dirt and debris from the environment within the hoof wall (stratum medium). This has the potential to spread to the avascular laminae (stratum internum) in cases of white line disease and seedy toe.
I use these nails on every horse I shoe and strongly believe that it has improved the overall quality of most horse’s hooves - particularly those with weaker feet.
